The Red Location Art Gallery and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum invites all professional experienced Beaders living in the Nelson Mandela Bay area to be part of a great initiative that focuses on traditional Eastern Cape beads.
A Master beading workshop will be presented and the sessions will include peer to peer learning, sharing of skills and knowledge, theoretical knowledge, demonstrations, talks by invited guests.
Participants will be expected to produce beadwork pieces for an exhibition, minimum of 2 beadwork pieces.
Selection
Beaders are to present a display of their top beadwork pieces at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum at 1 Park Drive Central on 4 May 2023 for selection. A selection panel of craft specialists will select participants to be part of this wonderful opportunity. The selectors’ decision is final.
Entrants to the beadwork selection must arrive at the Art Museum at 9:00. You will be given half an hour to setup up for the selection. Tables will be made available for display. The selection will take place between 10:00 – 12:00.
Crafters will be judged on the following criteria:
Quality of workmanship
Experience
Craft celebrating our heritage and culture
Craft must be innovative

Bring along a brief profile of yourself. If you selected an application form will have to be completed.
Selected participants will have to replicate 1 beadwork piece from the City’s collection and the 2nd piece participants will have to create a contemporary piece that incorporates their own interpretation.
The duration of the programme will be 4 weeks from 8 May until 2 June 2023.
Participants will be expected to attend 3 contact sessions during the week from 9:00 until 12:00 at the Art Museum.
A programme facilitator will guide the sessions.
All resources and materials will be provided.
An exhibition opening will be held the end of June 2023.
