Education overview


The Art Museum's Education Department provides an excellent range of services for schools and community groups.   No matter who you are or what your age, there are so many wonderful ways to learn about art. 


Objectives:

 

  • To discover the Art Museum’s collection
  • To perceive and think through art
  • To explore art history
  • To understand visual language
  • To create with a variety of materials and engage in a variety of art making processes
  • To develop learner’s appreciation of art

 


The Art Museum offers various programmes, including:

Art Museum Exhibition Tours

The public are welcome to browse our exhibitions.  

Free guided tours of our exhibitions for groups can be made by prior appointment. The Art Museum is open weekdays from 9h00 till 16h00 except Tuesday mornings and entrance is free. For larger groups please book and note that big groups must be broken into smaller groups of 30 or less.

  • Self guided exhibition tours: Groups of people, coordinators or teachers are welcome to guide their students or group through the museum independently.  
  • Guided exhibition Tours: Groups of people, families, organizations and schools are welcome to book a presenter/guide to conduct the guided tour.

Your booking is only confirmed once you have received written correspondence to confirm the guided tour from the Art Museum.

 

 


Special workshops    

Organizations or schools can request a specific type of workshop, to be arranged with the education officer and to be emailed in advance.

    


Outreach programmes   

The Art Museum welcomes requests to do outreach programmes either on the Museum’s premises or on your premises. If workshops are to be conducted on your premises, it is to be noted that there are limitations as to the type of workshop that can be run off-site. Requests are to be emailed well in advance.


School workshops

The visual art learner workshops are developed to make the most of the educational aspects of current exhibitions on show.  The learners are firstly taken on a tour of the current exhibitions and this is followed by the art workshop which is adapted to each grade.  Workshops are linked to the Art Museum’s Permanent Collection and exhibitions that are on show at the time.

Workshops are free and are held daily from 09h00 - 12h00 during a school term, except Tuesday mornings and weekends.  A minimum of 10 learners and maximum of 30 learners can attend a workshop.  Schools are welcome to book an art workshop for their class groups. Availability is dependent on bookings, please book well in advance. Bookings work on a first come first serve basis. Your booking is only confirmed once you have received written correspondence to confirm the workshop from the Art Museum.

Holiday workshops

School holiday Workshops are held during the school holidays in the June-July holiday and December-January holiday. 

Cost is normally R30 per child per workshop. Please visit our facebook page or view the events page on our website for updated information. Booking is essential.  For programme details please call us on 079 490 0690 or email us on, artmuseum@mandelametro.gov.za

The Art Museum is closed weekends and public holidays. We are open on certain Saturdays, please contact us to check which Saturday we will be open.
