The Red Location Art Gallery and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum commemorated the legacy of George Pemba by inviting contemporary artists to submit artworks for an exhibition.
Artists were challenged to make new works that reflect, revision, reinterpret, reimagine, excavate, interrogate, celebrate, contemplate, reconsider; re-examine; interact with; inquire; remaking; honour George Pemba in any medium.
The Selection panel chose 37 artworks of 25 artists to be on the exhibition.
Vuyisanani Ngwadla, was awarded the top prize for his artwork titled, "Gqeberha 06” and Wandile Msipa was presented an award for the most promising artwork on exhibition titled, "Still no Work”. Winners were selected by a special committee.
The 25 Artists selected to be on the exhibition included: Andrew Barber, Angie Franke Weisswange, Banele Njadayi, Bretten Anne Moolman, Bruce Gardner, Bulelani Mashiya, Gugulethu Mpofu, Karabo Marule, Lez Dor, Llise Dodd, Luthando Manga, Madoda Bethwell Honi, Mxolisi Sapeta, Nceba Ntwakumba, Ntomboxolo Nomkhalo, Phumlile Rawana, Phumla Citeko, Pilane Moapesi, Sakumzi Nyendwana, Simon Venter, Victoria Flowers, Vuyisanani Ngwadla, Wandile Msipa, Wellington Phepheng and Yvette Mey.
There are 16 artworks of George Pemba on the exhibition from the museum’s permanent collection the artwork titles are : Birth of site and service, Township granny, The Minister's new convert, Ting-Ting, Mr Pemba's mother, Mother's child, Xhosa woman, Portrait of Xolile Ndongeni, Portrait Family life, Portrait of Mr Gluck, Port Elizabeth freeway, Self-portrait "The Artist", Pensioners, Horse Memorial, New Brighton.
An exhibition opening for the exhibition was held on the 17 June 2023. The Opening Speaker was Thembinkosi Goniwe. The programme was opened with a performance by local poet, Nombesuthu Mandlovu.
