The Friends of the Art Museum invites you to attend a talk by Prof. Hilary Graham on Saturday, 22 February 2025 at 10:00am.

The Friends is a NPO that supports the Art Museum, by purchasing artworks, sponsoring various projects, and arranging events. 

The ' Sinking of the Mendi ' has been memorialised by the Eastern Cape Painter and ex University  of Fort Hare academician, Prof. Hilary Graham.  Prof Graham will present his 'Sinking of the Mendi' painting and it's creation narrative .  

The Event, will be complimented by a Poetry reading by Brian Walter and a live performance by the famous "Jazz Divas” from New Brighton who will dazzle the occasion with their virtuosity.

Background: The tragic sinking of the SS Mendi in World War One. In the early hours of the morning on 21 February 1917, the passage steam ship, the SS Mendi was accidently rammed by a larger ship in a thick fog 10 nautical miles (19 km) south of the Isle of Wight. 

The SS Mendi was carrying 823 men of the 5th Battalion of the South African Native Labour Corps who were to serve on the British side of the First World War. 616 South Africans lost their lives when the ship sank.
